They said it themselves -- even the right-wingers in New Zealand agree that there is a need for change in the face of global warming. They said so after viewing a showing of Inconvenient Truth and a presentation by Al Gore. Gore's film has now become one of the most influential films of the year and has now been nominated for an Oscar. His belief that it is time for people to stand up and get involved is now starting to resonate even with the political right in some parts of the world.
As the science clearly shows, it is not a matter of if climate change will occur, but how much will occur and how badly it will damage our ecosystem. Could it be that it is irreversible? We do not know unless we try to reverse it and reduce our carbon emissions to the point where it is lower than the absorbtion rate. But one thing is for sure -- we will not be able to achieve it unless we make an effort.
All of this means that as a country, we must shed ourselves of our dependence on Big Oil and switch to aletrnative fuels as quickly as possible. The pace of building wind farms, biofuel plants, and switching to E-85 cannot happen fast enough. Not only will it reduce oil use, it will create jobs as well.
Furthermore, we must break the cycle of violence in the Middle East -- that means bringing about a peaceful solution to the Israel/Palestine crisis and ending the occupation of Iraq, as our presence there is only making the problem worse. The reason is that all the warring parties are using massive quantities of oil, ruining the ecosystem, and polluting the air -- creating an environmental catastrophe as well as a humanitarian catastrophe.
